C.G. : Sacred Vow What's your favorite inspirational quote?

What's your favorite inspirational quote?

Posted on Oct 27th, 2007 by C.G. : Sacred Vow C.G.
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for October 27, 2007:

Favorite? Just One?! Must I?!!!
OK, I'll try....

Let's go with something I have heard attributed to Anais Nin and to Kant.

"We see things not as they are, but as we are."

Oooh, I knew just one was not going to work.  I can never have just one!
I love maxims, so there is always a new, momentary (situational) favorite...in fact, there is never one. Another favorite that stays with me as a constant reminder:

"Truth is but a resting place until the next revelation."

cool.  Though that first quote doesn't sound very Kantian to me, trying to figure out where that would have fit in his philosophy…  oh fun!  I get to dust off some of my books now!  Joy!  Will let you know if I find it somewhere in there.  (granted, I don't think I have any of his early works)  Thank you so much!

Thank you, Stacy. I have tried to figure out which of the two sources attributed really is the author of something that I have in mind so often.
Peace, my friend,

Try looking up David Hume.  I bet it was he.

This is one of those quotes that is attributed to many authors…and why not?  It's so perfect…many people use it in speeches and books.  I just love the truth of the quote!  I had thought the author was Anais Nin, too.  I'm so curious now…I'll be checking out David Hume.  :)  Thanks C.G. and Friendstacy.

Strange…but the second quote speaks to this… :)

Dina,
My second quote is from a collection of sayings that I thought were being delivered, through me, to friend–during the course of our conversations. She insisted I write all these down. I objected, saying they were 'addressed' to her; I was just the postman.
Shortly after I started to collect them, she died in an auto accident. For 20 years I tried to throw away the collection, each time finding new meaning in it and keeping it.
After a while, I realized it was very likely a gift that she gave, by drawing it out of me, as a guide for me in the time to come. Her spirit knew she was leaving.
The work is called, “Strike a Chord of Silence.” I have to bring it back out again. I think it is time for me to work with it.

Thanks for sharing both these quotes and also the story of the genesis of the second one, it adds to the  resonance of the quote.

C.G. this quote is so good, lots of people pretend ownership! LOL!
“We see things not as they are, but as we are”.  -H. M. Tomlinson http://kundahelp.com/inspiration.html this quote has been attributed to so many people not only Anais Nin or Kant LOL! who said what? it seems people freely appropriated other people's quotes, or probably, many people thought the same thing at one point without knowing another one somewhere had thought the same thing! any guesses? http://www.ibiblio.org/eldritch/hmt/gift.htm….

Thank you, Marie-Line. It's really quite entertaining to realize so many people have this perception. this is an added benefit to choosing this saying today!
